TUBOSCOPE Oilfield Services Division – Pioneer in
Non-Destructive Inspection of Oil Country Tubular Goods

The need for economical, effective inspection of oilfield tubular goods has been evident from the very beginning of oil well drilling operations. The extremely high cost of failure in drill pipe, casing, and tubing and sucker rods has been, and continues to be, a pressing problem for the petroleum producing industry.
Prior to TUBOSCOPE's introduction of non-destructive inspection techniques in 1938, the only way to prove the integrity of a length of pipe was by some form of visual inspection.
Early TUBOSCOPE inspection techniques refined visual methods by cleaning the pipe inside and out to facilitate visual inspection. The inside surface of the pipe was inspected with a specially designed optical instrument. A magnetic particle inspection technique was later added to make the service more effective. Today, however, TUBOSCOPE inspection services also include many highly sophisticated and in most cases, automated inspection methods. Optical and magnetic particle inspections are still available for some specialized applications.
TUBOSCOPE provides an entire family of inspection services designed to help the industry achieve maximum use from every length of pipe.
Today, TUBOSCOPE operates 67 different service locations including service facilities in many foreign countries. It provides the industry's largest field service inspection organization serving the active oil industry areas of the free world.
TUBOSCOPE inspection services are unique in the industry in that all inspection equipment is researched, designed, engineered and manufactured by TUBOSCOPE's own engineering and manufacturing facilities.
It's this total highly specialized and sophisticated capability which makes possible TUBOSCOPE's remarkable record of inspection accuracy, speed and economy.
When you purchase new tubular goods, particularly for critical service, TUBOSCOPE inspection can help you achieve the following economics:
Identify and eliminate from your string pipe containing mill defects which could lead to early failure.
Evaluate pipe, for true wall thickness.
Evaluate welded pipe for integrity of the weld as well as condition of the plate.
Verify the grade of the pipe you purchase.
Identify and evaluate the extent of any damage to pipe caused by handling or transit.
You can get optimum usable life from each length of used pipe by ordering a TUBOSCOPE inspection before returning it to service. Here's why:-
- Used tubing and drill pipe can be graded for further use, for limited use, or for scrap.
- Through evaluating the progression and severity of corrosion or service-oriented wear, you can plan your maintenance and service life program.
- Inspection helps prevent costly failure and down time by returning only serviceable lengths of pipe to your strings.
- Down-hole casing can be inspected for corrosion damage without pulling it from the well and with minimum down-hole.
- Oilfield tubular goods can be inspected on the rack, either at well site or in your pipe yard. TUBOSCOPE inspection equipment can go virtually anywhere.
TUBOSCOPE inspection of sucker rods can extend the life of your string by identifying defects that may cause failure.
